The Hunter Museum: art on a bluff above the river

The Hunter Museum of American Art sits on a bluff 90 feet above the Tennessee River, and the building is almost as good as the collection — a 1905 mansion, a 1970s addition, and a modern steel-and-glass wing that looks like it’s reaching for the water.

The collection

It’s American art from the colonial era to today: Winslow Homer, Thomas Cole, Andy Warhol, and a strong contemporary collection, plus one of the best studio glass collections in the Southeast. You can do it properly in about two hours. The views from the galleries — river, bridges, Lookout Mountain — are part of the exhibit.

What it costs and how to do it right

Admission is around $10–15 for adults, about $5 for kids — check huntermuseum.org for current prices. Here’s the move: go on the first Thursday of the month, 4–8pm, when admission is free. Weekday mornings are the quietest otherwise. It’s in the Bluff View Art District, so pair it with lunch and the river views outside.

Local tips

  • The outdoor sculpture plaza is free to wander and has the best river panorama downtown.
  • Parking validation is available — ask at the desk.
  • The museum cafe has a terrace overlooking the river. Worth the coffee.

10 Bluff View Ave. Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays (check the site — hours shift).
