Rock City: See 7 States from Lookout Mountain
Rock City has been advertising on barn roofs since the 1930s, and the “See 7 States” claim is only a slight exaggeration. It’s a garden of massive rock formations, narrow passages, and one very famous waterfall, perched on top of Lookout Mountain.
The walk
The Enchanted Trail winds about 4,100 feet through towering rock, across the Swing-A-Long Bridge (it sways — that’s the point), past Rainbow Falls, and ends at Lover’s Leap, the overlook where you can supposedly see seven states on a clear day. Then you come back through Fairyland Caverns, a slightly trippy blacklight gnome village that kids adore and adults pretend they’re too cool for.
What it costs and how to do it right
Check seerockcity.com for current prices and timed tickets — book ahead on weekends. Go early or late in the day; midday in summer is a slow shuffle behind tour groups. Budget at least 90 minutes, two if you linger at the overlooks.
Local tips
- There’s an Aquarium + Rock City combo ticket that’s cheaper than both separately, and they’re made to be done in one day — aquarium in the morning, Rock City in the afternoon.
- Christmas at Rock City (holiday lights season) is genuinely spectacular and a completely different experience from a daytime visit.
- Wear real shoes. The trail is paved but uneven, with lots of steps.
- It’s six scenic miles from downtown — the drive up Lookout Mountain is half the fun.
